Can your car see an obstacle on the road before you see it ? Can a wheelchair follow a nurse in the corridors without any effort from its passenger ? Can a partially sighted person visit a cultural spot without any help but a tiny yet coordinated voice in a headphone ?
Can we even dream of a road with less traffic jams – or should we just give up driving ?
At which point does the dream turn into reality ? You’ll be surprised to find out that research almost erased the boundary that separates wishes from reality.
If you want to find out more on these subjects and others, come and visit INRIA’s stand in the Parc Paul Mistral at Grenoble during the Science Festival from 11th to 14th of October 2012.
Three INRIA team-projects will be there to present their research and answer your questions.
The NECS team-project will show you their work on traffic road optimization using speed limitations and traffic lights.
The WAM team-project will present software which enables partially sighted people to gain autonomy on a cultural visit. The software is downloaded on a standard I-phone connected to iPhone with earphones through which the person receives environment information. The information is constantly adjusting as the person moves on, the same way you receive road information on your GPS while driving.
The E-MOTION project-team will display two platforms:
- an intelligent vehicle, which can detect obstacles on the road and analyze them in order for the driver to anticipate his/her next move better.
- an intelligent wheelchair which can follow a person. Many hospitals and retirement centers see a valuable application for this technology, which could give greater autonomy to seriously disabled people.
